“Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. And the Angel of the Lord said to him, ‘Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me. The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.’” Numbers 22: 31-33
In chapter 22 of Numbers Balaam was summoned by the king and enticed by the riches of the world to do what the king wanted, even though God told Balaam not to go.
Balaam, because of his worldly desires, became blind to the sin and went after the riches. But God is good and had Jesus show up as a Theophany in the Old Testament and He stood in the way. Because Balaam was so blinded by his own lust, He did not see Jesus standing there with a sword, but the donkey did!
The donkey turned aside so that Balaam would not be killed by the sword and you know what the donkey received as a reward from Balaam? She received a beating…3 times! Finally, God spiritually opens the eyes of Balaam, he realizes his sin and repents. Because of the donkey’s obedience to God and not man, Balaam was spared and saved.
We are represented by one of these characters here, aren’t we? We are either like Balaam or like the donkey. It is not popular to view yourself like a donkey, I get it. Just think about it for a moment though and how it applies to us today.
As a Christ follower, our spiritual eyes are opened and we see destruction coming for those without Christ in their lives. We see a sword that will destroy them if we do not preach and warn the world to help them turn aside off of the path of destruction. And the world hates us for that. It “beats” us many times.
Fear of the world and how we might be treated should never stop us from proclaiming the gospel. If we are persistent, maybe the eyes of others will be opened and just maybe they will repent and be spared eternal destruction! Have you told anyone about our Lord Jesus Christ today?
