“Also He said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lamp stand?'” – Mark 4:21
In this chapter, Jesus is talking to the people in parables and talks about a light under a basket and bed. This lamp and light represent the truths that Jesus shared with them. For us, it represents sharing the gospel with others.
Jesus mentions this basket and bed, at first glance we can look at this and think, “of course I understand this. I am not to hide my Christianity and I need to live it in front of others for them to see.” I believe that is a good way to view this scripture but I think there is more to it.
In this scripture, the bushel basket can represent work and business while the bed can represent comfort and laziness. Observed from this view, it is as if Jesus is saying to us as Christ followers, “The bushel basket represents business, which if allowed, will steal time that should be given to the Lord. The bed speaks of laziness and both are enemies of evangelism.”
Many of us can pour everything we have into business or become comfortable and lazy in retirement. If either of those things have priority in our lives today then more than likely the lamp in our life is hidden. Let’s make Jesus and evangelism priority over our success and comfort. Those are things we should find in Jesus anyway, not in the world.
