Are You Running Away?

“Then Jesus answered and said to them, ‘have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to take Me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me, but the Scriptures must be fulfilled.’ Then they all forsook Him and fled.”Mark 14:48-50

Judas had already set out to betray Jesus. They had the last supper and now were in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus is praying and He told His disciples to pray as well. Each time He came back to check on them, they were asleep.

Judas then leads hundreds of troops to capture Jesus. When Judas and the troops arrive in the garden, we see

two different responses by the disciples. One resorted to violence and then we note that they all fled. They ran away terrified. Isn’t that interesting? Think about it for a minute.

The disciples are Jewish, right? You would think they would know what Moses wrote in Deut. 20:1-4. Read it and you will know what I mean. If they would have recalled God’s word to mind and remembered all they have seen Jesus do, would they all have run off terrified? Probably not. What if they had been watching and praying as Jesus had commanded them to do? Do you think they would have tried to battle all alone and then run away terrified? Probably not. They would have probably been in the Spirit and prepared for what was to come, just as Jesus was doing when He was praying.

Before we get down on the disciples, we must examine our own lives. As Christ followers we know Jesus does not need us to fight for Him, He fights for us! When we are afraid, do we remember that?

What can we learn from the disciples in this story? If we are watching, praying and standing on His word and promises we will be peaceful. However, many times we are so terrified of something happening in our lives that we feel like running away. Maybe you find yourself in that situation today.  I pray we all remember His promises today and stand on them. He has already won the battle and He is alive, not on a cross anymore. And He has gone to prepare a place for us in heaven and is returning for us very soon! Are you ready?
