“Now the Lord said to Joshua; ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed, take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land. And you shall do to Ai and its king, what you did to Jericho and its king…'” – Joshua 8:1-2
In Joshua chapter 7, the children of Israel committed a trespass against God. Achan took the “accursed” things into his possession. He let sin into the camp of a people set apart for God. And as a result, when they went to battle, they were defeated. However, when the sin was dealt with and confessed, God began to lead them again.
In chapter 8 of Joshua, we see that Joshua was discouraged and afraid. His focus was on the failure of the last battle. God then comes in and He speaks to Joseph and tells him to be encouraged. He did not yell at Joseph or call him a failure. God did not remind him of the last failure or even recall it. God reminded Joseph of the last battle won, not the last battle they lost! Sin was dealt with and confessed, never to be remembered again.
Do you ever feel like your sins are always in front of you? Do they weigh on your mind and heart and make you feel defeated? Jesus dealt with our sin on the cross. When we confess it and accept Him, it is finished! It is not recalled any longer.
If you are being reminded of sin today, has it been dealt with? If it has not, confess it to the Lord. If it has, then be encouraged. God is not recalling the last battle lost, He wants you to focus on the last battle won. He is the one who fought it for us. Battle won…it is finished!
