“And He said to them, ‘Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?’ ‘Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.’ When He said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.” – Luke 24:38-40
Here, Jesus had risen and He spent 40 more days on earth before ascending into heaven. During this time, Jesus begins revealing Himself to His disciples. We find Him walking with them and talking with them on the roads. We find Him hanging out at their houses and eating with them. And even though He was with them, the Bible tells us here that they did not recognize Him and did not remember that He said He would rise up again. It says their hearts burned inside of them when He spoke but they did not recognize Him. It wasn’t until He reminded them of what He said and showed them His hands and feet, the physical evidence, that they remembered.
Today, we have all the physical evidence in the world revealing God to us every day, especially in His written Word. And through His Spirit He speaks to us. Sometimes our hearts burn inside of us and we do not even realize He is there with us. He speaks to us and we too, like the disciples, may not be listening or paying attention. And with everything going on around us, we may even doubt and fear even as the apostles did.
Many times, Christ followers live with a sense of defeat even though we are “more than conquerors” in Jesus. And those who do not walk with Jesus daily may feel like there is no hope in this world. God has so much more for us yet we seem to focus only on what we will “eat, drink and wear.” I pray that as Jesus talks to us, our hearts burn inside of us and that we will listen. I pray each one of us, saved or not, fully surrender to Jesus once and for all. Time is short! He is risen! He is coming again very, very soon! Are you ready?
