“And He said to them, ‘You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” – John 8:23-24
Jesus is speaking to the Jews here and some believed and some did not. Believed what? That He was Messiah. That He was the promised one that was spoken of throughout the Old Testament. He was now standing in front of them and they still did not believe.
As Jesus spoke to the Jews he tells them they will “die in their sins”. Wait a minute! If these are the chosen people and followed the law, how can they be sinners and of this world? Psalm 51:5 answers that question. It says, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.” In Romans 3:23 it tells us “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. And in Romans 3:10 it tells us that there is “none righteous”.
These people thought they were good with God. Maybe they were good guys that took care of their families by going to work every day? Maybe they loved their kids with all of their heart? Maybe they were just salt of the earth blue collar workers, you know, just really good people. The problem is, they were born into sin, like all of us. There was no way around that fact. And if they did not believe Jesus is Savior, they would die and go to hell. They needed to believe in Christ Jesus.
Maybe you thought you had believed in Him and maybe you think you have been right with God, like the Jews here. If you are, your lifestyle will reflect it. We all make mistakes but how are we living consistently? What are the habits of our daily lives and do those habits reflect those of a Christ follower or do they reflect the world?
The bible says, “Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Cor. 6:9-10)
These are the words of God. These are not my words or the words of any other pastor or Christ follower. This is the message that God brought through His Son, Jesus the Christ. We must believe Jesus died to save us and accept Him as Savior. When we have done that, we will be free from sin and hell. It is just that simple!
