Will You Ask?

“Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above. But Ahaz said, ‘I will not ask nor will I test the Lord!’  Then he said, ‘hear now, o house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?” Isaiah 7:11-13

In the book of Isaiah, chapters seven through twelve are known as the chapters of Immanuel (God with us) because of all the clear prophecies of Jesus the Savior. King Ahaz was now ruling over Judah, and Syria and Israel were coming against them for war. God sends Isaiah the prophet to encourage Ahaz. Through Isaiah, God tells Ahaz not to worry about the problem and just to focus on God. God tells Ahaz to believe and then says, “if you will not believe, surely you will not be established.”

To encourage Ahaz even more, God tells him to ask for a sign. Ahaz would not ask. He said he did not want to tempt God. That answer appears to be a righteous one, however, it was not. Ahaz did not want to ask God because he knew if he did and God showed him a sign, he would have to believe in God. Ahaz was too proud for that. His attitude was “never show weakness” and he would not submit. And because he trusted in himself and was too proud, the nation was defeated.

God instructed Ahaz to ask and Ahaz did not. Whenever God tells us to do something, we better take him up on it. In this case, Ahaz would not have been tempting God because God told him to do it. He would be obeying God.

Our pride is probably the number one thing that keeps us from being obedient to God. And, it is probably the number one thing that keeps us from heaven and on a direct path to hell. God was reaching out to Ahaz but Ahaz did not want the help. If he accepted it, that meant he would have to believe and trust in God. That would mean he would have to admit he is not in charge of his life and God is. He was unwilling to do that.

What about you today? Is there an internal struggle in your life and you are to proud to let God take care of it? Do you feel like if you accept His help then you have to believe and you don’t want to? Ahaz did that and was defeated. Will you pick the same path as him or will you finally accept Jesus into your life?
