“For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed.” – 2 Thessalonians 2:7
The believers in Thessalonica had their faith shaken a little. False teachers had come in and taught them that the day of the Lord had already come. Paul reaffirms some things for them right here and begins to tell them one more thing must happen, the catching up or “rapture” of the church.
I acknowledge that not every Christ follower believes that the church will be taken out of the earth before judgment, there are differences of opinion. Personally, I believe in pre-tribulation rapture of the church based on a few things and one of those things is taught here. Additionally, when I look at Old Testament scripture, I see Noah and Lot being “taken out” before total destruction. Too simple for you? Need more information to form your own thoughts on the matter? Awesome! Study it to know what you believe, but for our purposes here, we are going to go with pre-tribulation. Why would I hope for anything else?
Paul was comforting the believers here that the lawless one, Antichrist, can only be revealed once the true Christian’s, the church, have been taken out of the way. The Holy Spirit living in the life of the believer is what is restraining the seven years of the tribulation (Revelation 3-19). Just as Lots presence and Noah’s presence held back the wrath of God, today the Christian church does the same until rapture ushers in the Day of the Lord.
Paul ends this chapter by reminding the people to comfort one another with these words. Why would this bring comfort? Because they knew they would be spared from the tribulation period, a time of hell on earth.
Do these words comfort you? If not, maybe there is a change that needs to take place in your life today. Maybe you once served but now you are no longer following Jesus. Maybe you never accepted Him. Today is the day to change that and turn back to Christ! Where will you be on the Day of the Lord? Accept Jesus and be prepared and spared!
