“But those who boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know Me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!” –Jeremiah 9:24
Jeremiah is known as “the weeping prophet” and we see another cry of his at the beginning of this chapter. He loves his people and his nation. He was crying out to them to turn back to God. He was simply doing what God had placed on his heart to do.
G. Herbert Livingston writes, “Humans strive for wisdom, might, and riches, while God delights in loving kindness, judgment (justice), and righteousness. Blessed is the one who understands the Lord so as to delight in what He delights.”
In this chapter, God seems to take a “time-out” from all the discussion around judgment that is coming to remind the people of who He is. He is loving, kind, just, righteous, and full of true wisdom and true knowledge. He is Jehovah Yahweh meaning “He is”. The Alpha and Omega, beginning and the end. He is Adonai or “my Lord”. He is Jehovah Shalom, “The Lord is Peace”. What a great God!
In the book of Jeremiah, it does not seem there is much peace happening. It was not because God changed because the Bible teaches us He never changes, He is the same “yesterday, today and forever.” We are the ones who change and leave Him. And here God is telling His people, “If you truly knew Me, if you truly understood My love and care for you and who I am to you, you would turn to Me and never walk away.” The problem was, they did not have true knowledge of Him. There was no true teaching of God’s word and the people were not seeking Him on their own.
Your day may be busy and your attention may be pulled in many directions. God took a quick “time-out” here to remind the people of who He really is and His love. We need to take some time in response and just sit at His feet today and learn from Him.
