“The shepherds of my people have lost their senses. They no longer seek wisdom from the Lord. Therefore, they fail completely, and their flocks are scattered.” – Jeremiah 10:21 (NLT)
The only way for man to rule well is if he is governed by God (Proverbs 29:2). If God is his chief concern, everything else will fall into place (Matthew 6:33). The leaders over the nation of Judah at the time of Jeremiah were not ruled by God. That is to say, they did not put themselves into submission to Him. They did not remember the weight of God’s Word and did not take their position and role seriously.
The Bible says, “Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly” (James 3:1 NLT). This was truly the case in the book of Jeremiah. And when judgment came, it began with the leadership, both political and spiritual.
Romans 12:18 says, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath.” As Christ followers, we are commanded to live peacefully if we can, as much as it is in our power to do so. That does not mean we should not ask questions. And we should not follow leaders blindly because we think, “well, that is what I’ve always done.” 1 John 4:1 tells us not to believe every spirit, but to test the spirits to see whether they are from God. Why? Because many false prophets and ideas have gone out into the world. This is why it is important to know your Bible!
To find out if anything is off or crooked, you set it next to something that is straight and true. In that same way, our spiritual lives must be examined next to God’s Word. That is the only way we will know if we are on target. How does what you believe today measure up to God’s Word? Is it your opinion or interpretation? Do you read the Bible to try and fit it into your lifestyle or do you allow the living word to come off of the pages and change you? Know God’s Word and it will be difficult for you to be deceived!
