“But I was like a docile lamb brought to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised schemes against me, saying, “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.” –Jeremiah 11:19
Jeremiah was simply doing what God had called him to do. God called him to warn the people and to teach them truth. And what did he get in return for his love and teaching of the truth? They plotted to kill him. They no longer wanted to hear his words. God’s truth did not fit into how they lived their lives. To them it was considered “hate speech” although it was God’s Word and done out of love.
The nation of Judah knew the promises, but they were not being taught correctly. This led them to believe, “God would not send judgment on us. We have God’s Temple here. We have the Ark of the Covenant here. Our priests have God’s law here and God would never do that to us. We can live however we want and God will still let us into heaven.” Their beliefs were out of line with God’s Word which is why Jeremiah was sent.
Today we see the same things. Recently at one of her concerts, Lady Gaga used her platform to share her opinion about Christianity. Lady Gaga, after calling him an expletive (very Christ-like, right?) name said, “To Mike Pence, who thinks that it’s acceptable that his wife works at a school that bans LGBTQ, you’re wrong. You’re the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian. I am a Christian woman, and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice, and everybody is welcome.”
Lady Gaga was right in saying that everybody is welcome and that there is no prejudice. But, God is Just and He is Righteous and commands obedience. Salvation is for all yet there is one thing we must do to gain eternity in heaven…we must accept it. It is freely given but not always accepted. Many want the free gift of salvation but are not willing to submit to Jesus as Lord to gain it. They are much like the people in Jeremiah’s day.
We must accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. You must lay down your life and be obedient to His Word. Just because you know who Jesus is or were raised in a Christian home or environment, does not mean you go to heaven (Matt 7:21). Even the demons knew who Jesus was. Jesus must become your Lord and Savior and that requires obedience. Jesus said it Himself, “if you love Me, obey Me.”
There are many pastor/teachers preaching truth today, just like Jeremiah. And yet, many are not listening. Instead, they are hearing false or half-truths from leaders, religious elite and famous people who are teaching incorrectly. And as far as the accusation against the Pence’s is concerned, you need to re-read your Bible, specifically 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.
In this world we must be very careful to listen to God’s Word and not to “follow our hearts” and spout off our opinions. If someone famous really read the Bible as a true Christ follower, they would never make a statement like the one above. Speaking against something that God is against is simply obedience. True hate speech is not teaching truth out of fear that you will offend someone.
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.” – Matthew 7:13-15
