“It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the adversities which I purpose to bring upon them, that everyone may turn from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” – Jeremiah 36:3
We all need to be loved and if we are honest, we all want to hear those three famous words, “I love you”. To me, there is another set of three words from God that I love to hear, “It may be.” I believe these three words are equal to God’s love for us.
In chapter 36 of Jeremiah, God instructs Jeremiah to write all of the words down that He has spoken. He was to take a scroll and write all the words of judgment that God spoke against Israel. Before Jeremiah could ask God why, He tells Jeremiah His purpose. This is where God says these three loving words, “It may be.”
These three words are God’s love because they bring hope. They bring an opportunity and one more chance to repent. To repent is to turn away from something and go in the opposite direction. Here, God is telling Jeremiah to tell the nation of Judah to turn back to Him. Was God telling them this because He wanted to spoil their fun? Was God telling them this because He is a “killjoy”? Not at all! He was telling them the truth even though it didn’t feel good because they were headed for destruction.
God loved them so much that not only did Jeremiah proclaim it, God wanted it written down because maybe the people would hear what He was saying through a different means of communication.
In the NT, Jesus (God in flesh) came to the Nation of Israel. They had God’s Word in the Old Testament but that was the law. Jesus came to fulfill the law and through His death, gave life to all who believe. God not only gave His spoken Word, He gave His written Word and Jesus has come as His Living Word. Why? He may use different means to come into our lives because “It may be” that you and I get another opportunity to have salvation through Him. Have you accepted that free gift yet?
