“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account”. – Hebrews 4:15
Prior to this verse, the writer tells us of the impact God’s Word has upon our lives. He compares it to a “double-edged” sword and tells us it is powerful and it is living.
Have you ever sat in church, listened to a message or read a devotion and something you heard or read hit very close to your heart? Maybe it hit so close to home you thought someone was watching you at all times and knows your inner most thoughts? Maybe you thought that someone gave inside information to the pastor about you specifically? That is the sharpness of God’s Word piercing your heart and delivering a message in just the right place at the right time. Many of us have and continue to experience these times in our lives. When this happens, it is very important for us to listen because that is God being very personal with us and taking time to speak with us directly. It is the “Sword of the Spirit”.
Nothing is hidden from God. He knows everything and sees everything. He knows the intent of the heart. He is omniscient or all-knowing, all-wise and all-seeing. In the context of this chapter, God knows where there is real faith in Jesus and those who were simply following Christ in outward appearance only. He knows who follows in pretense and who follows in truth and it is His Word that points it out. God’s Word exposes the intents of the heart. It convicts the Christ follower in his/her sanctifying walk with God while it points out sin to the non-believer with the intent to point them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Knowing these things should not push us away from Jesus but rather bring us closer to our Savior. His goal is not to punish, although He will. His goal is restoration. His goal is salvation through a relationship with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Has He pierced your heart lately through His Word? If so, are you listening? If Jesus is your Savior, you are on the right side of that double-edged sword!
“A sword with two edges has no blunt side: it cuts both this way and that. The revelation of God given us in Holy Scripture is edge all over. It is alive in every part, and in every part keen to cut the conscience, and wound the heart. Depend upon it, there is not a superfluous verse in the Bible, nor a chapter which is useless.” – C.H. Spurgeon
