Want To Get Away?

Devotional

“Now the Lord had said to Abram: Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.”Genesis 12:1

To get to the land that God was going to show Abram only took one step. It only took one step to show faith and trust in what God had planned. And, we commend Abram for taking that step. It would take a lot of courage and boldness to leave the comforts of familiarity and close friends to receive a new direction in life with the Lord.

Abram did take that step of faith because God was calling. Although he stepped out, Abram did so incorrectly. Abram and his wife Sarai are “one flesh,” and he was told to pack up and head out, leaving everyone else behind. We find, however, that Abram did not do that. He did set out but took his nephew Lot and Lot’s family with him. This would prove to be a hindrance to Abram in the future.

When Jesus sent out His disciples, He commanded them not to take any money or provisions, just what they had on them at that moment (see Matt. 10:9-10). They were to trust in God to provide and make the way. They listened, took the one step in the direction Jesus was telling them to go, and the Lord made the way.

The Bible tells us Jesus has gone before us to make the way into heaven, and He wants us there with Him. Abram did not “magically” get to the land of Canaan, he had to make a conscious decision and take a step of faith. In that same way, Jesus knocks on the door of our hearts and invites us to be with Him in eternity, but we must make a decision. We either take a step of faith towards Him, or we remain where we are.

Many times we hear the Lord telling us, “Come, I will save you and give you rest for your soul.” Yet the vast majority of the human race says, “No thanks, I do not want to leave my friends and comforts,” not realizing those may be the very things keeping them from eternity in heaven. Jesus calls to us, and we must turn to Him as Lord and Savior to be saved. Anything keeping you from Jesus?

“Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent.”Acts 13:26
