“And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time.” – Luke 8:27
Demons are fallen angels that followed Satan and were cast out of heaven. Their intentions are permanently set on opposing God and His work. Opposition and demon possession was so intense during this time because Jesus was walking on the earth. Just as it was real then, it is still real today although maybe not seen as much.
This man, or men (Matthew describes two of them in his account), were violent, undressed, living among the dead, and cast out of society. They were occasionally shackled and chained and put under guard. The leaders and people of the region of Decapolis had no answer for them. They lived in the city at one time but were cast out. No amount of money thrown at the problem helped. No rehab facility or social group could help. The world had no answers.
In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus tells us that demons can come and go out of a person who is not a believer in Jesus. There are times when that person tries to clean up their life, but that demon shows up again with more demonic spirits to dwell in that person once more. Without a changed heart for Jesus, nothing will stop demons from coming back.
The Bible tells us here that this demon often “seized him.” This would lead us to believe there must have been moments of clarity in this man’s life. I wonder if, during a time of clarity, this man called out to the Lord for help. I wonder if he called out to Jesus to save him. What a picture that would be because we see Jesus’ boat land on the shore and He steps out of it and into this man’s life…amazing!
The oppression and depression of Satan and his demons are real. Demon possession is as real today, as it was then. But, they are a defeated enemy by the work of Jesus on the cross. When we cry out to Jesus for help, He is sure to show up as He did in this man’s life.
