“…those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile…”
– Matthew 15:18
Whatever is consumed through the mouth eventually turns into waste. It never begins in the heart or touches it physically. However, whatever comes out of the mouth begins in the heart, these are the words that expose what is really on the inside of the person. That was the point Jesus was making in this chapter and around these verses.
The Pharisees were accusing the disciples of being unclean because they did not wash in the ceremonial way that was taught in their traditions. Jesus called them hypocrites because as they pointed out the faults of others with traditions, Jesus pointed out that they were not following God’s very commands, which was a much bigger offense.
The heart spoken of here is much more than the organ inside of us that pumps our blood, it is referred to as man’s moral nature. If it is far from God it is the corrupt source of human motives and desires. It manifests itself by impure thoughts, then depraved words and then by evil acts.
What we write on social media or discuss with others says a lot about our true character and our relationship with Jesus. The Bible says, “from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Jesus said “but the words you speak come from the heart that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.”
What do you hear coming out of your mouth the most? When I ask my nephew “where does Jesus live?” his immediate reply is, “in my heart.” Would your answer be the same and would others be able to honestly say they see that and hear that from your life?
Today, listen to what comes out of your mouth. Whatever you discuss the most reveals what is truly inside and ruling in your heart. If it is not the Lord, what will you do to change that? Will you yield to Jesus and truly let Him rule your heart?
