Distracted

Devotional II

“…Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart…”

– Luke 9:47

The Lord knows all of our thoughts and the intents of our hearts (Psalm 94:11). We see a good example of this here in the Book of Luke. Jesus had just healed a boy, something they had failed to do even though they were given the power and authority to do it. And, it was because they were distracted.

As they walked along with Jesus, the disciples began arguing back-and-forth about who was going to be the greatest in the Lord’s kingdom. Their view was off. They still thought Jesus was going to overthrow the reign of the Romans and set up His throne here on earth, even though He just talked about His coming death once more.

The disciples were distracted by their view of things. Still impressed by status and position. They still thought position and titles were earned through striving for more.

Jesus taught that the meek shall inherit the earth. It was “the least of these” that the Lord focused on. And, Jesus demonstrated that to His disciples in this scene while having a child sitting next to Him as an example.

What impresses you? Is it what others have or how they live? Do you hold those people in high esteem because of what you see? A little child is the emblem of simplicity and humility. Jesus shows us that lesson with children several times. Pay attention to the meek an humble, watch how they live. It is how Jesus lived. You may be surprised to learn who is more blessed by the Lord.

“Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me, for he who is least among you all will be great.”

– Luke 9:48
