Just Like All The Rest

Devotional II

“No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.”

– Mark 3:27

I once read the prayer of a beautiful Puritan saint who asked the Lord to “never make the multitude my model.” Who prays like this anymore? Many of us want to be like a multitude. Sometimes we even pray for conformity and acceptance of others. We seek to be part of the larger group when the Bible tells us all along to stay on the narrow road.

Jesus’ illustration of the strong man points to Satan, the prince of this world. He is the strong man in the story being bound by our risen Lord. Jesus was doing the work of His Father, and the devil’s dominion has been defeated. Although this is the case, Jesus’ parable can be viewed in another way, which I believe to be Biblical. Although Satan has been defeated, he is still very active. His goal today is trying to bind the “strong man” of the Holy Spirit from working in the life of the Christian.  His end is near, he knows it, and he is trying to take as many as he can down with him.

We find ourselves in a peculiar place as pilgrims in a foreign land. We desire to be liked and part of a group. Many times in that effort, we become like the multitude and live like the world. We become conformed when the Bible tells us to be transformed and unlike our surroundings. We know longer remain pilgrims but residents. The “strong man” of Christ has been bound in our lives because we allow our houses to be plundered by wrong desires and pursuits. A Christian brother once said, “It is not an easy task to stand for God as we should in our generation,” and how true that is! And yet, it is not impossible either for the Bible tells us that all things are possible with God!

What about you today? Has your desire been conformity to the masses? Does your life look more like those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus? Is your soul feeling plundered, alone, and desperate? The Bible tells us that when our anxieties accumulate in our minds, God’s care for us will consume our soul. Jesus said to cast your cares on Him because He cares for you. Be unbound by Satan today and let the powerful man of Christ rule and reign within you!

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

– 2 Timothy 1:6-7
