“…that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren…”
– Deuteronomy 17:20
God’s Word brings the right positioning. It brings the proper perspective and reminds us of who He is and who we in relation to Him. It also reminds us of our neighbor and that they are the Lord’s children too. It has been said that death is the great equalizer for the human race. It is inevitable, and nothing that anyone can escape. Therefore, no one person is more important than another. We are all precious in His sight.
God laid out principles for kings that would eventually be established over the nation of Israel. The kings were in a high position and power above the rest. With that top honor came more responsibility. If they were to govern over men, they must be governed by God. If not, their intentions would be skewed, and no longer would they serve God or the people, they would begin serving themselves. When leaders begin to serve themselves, there is always division.
Positions of authority come with great responsibility and more accountability. It is God’s Word correctly applied that governs the righteous person in these roles. It keeps them looking forward and not turning aside to the right or left. When observed, a person in a leadership role will always remember they are serving God and others. Their hearts will not be lifted up but rather meek and humble. This attitude causes unity in Christ Jesus!
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
– Luke 10:27
