“But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand.”
– Mark 13:23
Before deceiving themselves and millions of others throughout the years, I often wonder if Joseph Smith or Charles Taze Russell took heed to these words of Jesus? If our Lord and Savior told us all things beforehand, why would we require “another gospel?” These deceivers have made God evil by claiming the truth arrived only to them and in their time. If that were accurate, God would then be cruel by allowing everyone before their arrival on the scene to be misled. But, we know that our heavenly Father is not evil, but He is just and right. He is loving and righteous and has told us all we need to know in His Word beforehand.
Teaching accurately is the most important thing for the church to be doing to equip the saints. It has been said that “those who are truly saved begin to have an unquenchable thirst for God’s Word.” In comparison to this statement, where do you stand today?
Jesus, in His Word, has told us the signs of the times and the end of the age beforehand. It is good to be aware of these things, yet not the fundamental principle. As Christ-followers, we are not looking for signs of His coming, we are looking for Him! Waiting with that anticipation keeps us holding onto the things of the world lightly, living with a sense of urgency and holiness, and keeps us speaking to the lost.
“Brethren, rally to the old standard. Fight to the death for the old gospel, for it is your life. Whatever forms of expression you may use as you advance in knowledge, ever keep the cross of Jesus Christ in the forefront, and let all the blessed truths which gather around it be heartily maintained.”
– C.H. Spurgeon
