Distant and Overgrown

“…every branch that bears fruit, He prunes.”

– John 15:2

When we attempt to infuse our activities into His Church without the Lord’s prompting, our energy is exerted in areas we may never have been called to. It was A.W. Tozer who wrote, “If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, ninety-five percent of what we do would go on, and no one would know the difference…” I believe this is an accurate statement. However, in our world today, God may have reversed it.

As we experience difficult days, at the time of this writing, it would seem that the Lord has recently stripped His church of ninety-five percent of what it has been doing. It may be that we are left with a smaller percentage because that is all our Lord ever wanted. What is amazing and thrilling at the same time is that the Holy Spirit is still moving in mighty ways. Through these extreme days, we are seeing many called back to Christ, no human activity could ever accomplish so great an outcome!

The Holy Spirit is a person, he can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). That sorrow of His comes when we become distant and overgrown with anything that takes our attention from God. It is then that our heavenly Father may begin the pruning process in our lives. What a necessary action of selective removal to shape, improve, and sustain our spiritual health that we might produce quality “fruit!”

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit…”

– John 15:16
