“…because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.”
– Joshua 14:14
At eighty-five years old, Caleb still had the same valiant heart and warrior spirit that he had over forty years prior. Was he perfect? No, I am confident he was not. His heart, however, was always for His God, and his desire was to fulfill the Lord’s purposes.
Hebron was a land in Judah that was being settled by the Nation of Israel. It was promised to them by God. It is an area where the Anakim, the giants, lived. Caleb knew it was his land. And, he understood that if it was given to him by God, then it would be by the strength of the Lord that the giants would be driven out.
Caleb had been spared from the plague that took the life of the unbelieving spies. He knew that if the Lord had kept him alive this long, God would give him victory once again. He was not brought through the wilderness and plagues to now be thrown into the enemy’s hands. His heart still wholly followed the Lord God of Israel, which was the secret of his success. Caleb could see victory, but only through the eyes of faith. It is the same for us today. We have victory in the Cross of Christ and His shed blood for us, but do we believe that by faith?
Jesus defeated eternal death and gives life eternally in heaven. Have we claimed that “promised land” for ourselves? If we have claimed it, have we forgotten the Lord’s victories in our lives? Someone once wrote, “He who fights with the precious blood of Jesus fights with a weapon that cannot know defeat. Sin dies at its presence, death ceases to be death, and heaven’s gates are opened.” Heaven’s gates are opened to you today, and the giants you face lay in defeat when you remember and claim the precious blood of the Lamb!
