“Nevertheless for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem…”– 1 Kings 15:4
Is there anything you and I can do to ruin God’s plans? Can we veer the Lord off course by our actions? The Bible says, “The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying, ‘Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass, and as I have purposed, so it shall stand'” (Isaiah 14:24). Our wrong decisions and actions may take us out of the Lord’s perfect will, but His purposes and plans are fulfilled with or without us.
Towards the end of Solomon’s reign, we find the kingdom divided by the Lord. The Northern tribes of Israel experienced nine separate dynasties. Yet the Southern tribes of Judah experienced only one, all in the Davidic line. Although king Abijah “walked in the sins of his father” and “his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God,” Abijah was allowed to be king for three years over Judah. His wickedness did not thwart God’s plans. God made a promise, and He saw it through. Jesus came through the Davidic line. It is through His blood, shed on the cross that, Judah’s dynasty will now last forever. The true King is now sitting on His throne in eternity. Jesus finished the work!
To take these words to mean that our decisions in this life do not matter, every Christian must remember one simple yet impactful sentence of our Savior. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Our actions may not change His plans, yet they will certainly allow us to be part of His work. Today’s events may not turn out as you hope. However, you can be sure that whatever happens, it is all part of God’s plan. He has not lost His sovereignty and never will!
“God’s dominion is total: He wills as He chooses and carries out all that He wills, and none can stay His hand or thwart His plans.”– J. I. Packer
